Economic value of sports underappreciated, says Okonjo-Iweala

World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Director General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said that the world is yet to fully appreciate the economic value of sports, which potential she described as enormous.

Okonjo-Iweala, who also said that African countries can make better use of the sporting sector for economic benefits, added that sports hold the solution to some of the continent’s problems.

Speaking at the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi, Okonjo-Iweala said: “The economic value in the sport is so underappreciated. It’s an exciting potential that we have not really tapped on the continent. 70 per cent of the income is generated in Europe, and this must be expanded to other regions.

“We have to get some of this back into Africa; we absolutely must.” Earlier, FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, committed to introducing Cotton-4 products into programmes run by his organisation.
