Enugu becomes first state with subnational electricity market as EERC replaces NERC

Enugu State has become the first state in Nigeria and Africa to establish a sub-national electricity market. The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has assumed full regulatory oversight of the state’s electricity sector from the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy transition.

The EERC has issued licences to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited and Fedikore Limited. Mainpower will take over electricity operations in Enugu State, while Fedikore will build a 10MW power plant.
